Many people are familiar with the “Big Shipwreck” of the WWII Liberty ship at Kaiolohia (Shipwreck Beach) but fewer are aware of the “Smaller Shipwreck” at Awalua Beach where the YO-21 sits.

The YO-21 was a Navy yard oiler, a 160-foot single-screw steel tanker with triple expansion steam engine. Built in Newburgh, NY by the Tank Shipbldg. Co. in 1918. Assigned to the 14th Naval Dist. at Pearl. She was present during the attack, making her the 4th known ship present to remain in Hawaiian waters.
